Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge—competing browsers built from the same. He is frequently cited in the international media and is a regular commentator on broadcast news, with appearances on. Microsoft Edge is the new default browser in Windows 10, and as part of the software giant’s attempt to boost its adoption, it is offering a feature that displays news on the start page and in. Today kicks off Microsoft Build 2019, and with it, lots of exciting announcements for the next version of Microsoft Edge! Less than a month ago, we shipped our first Dev and Canary channel preview builds of the next version of Microsoft Edge, built on the Chromium open-source project. Microsoft's Kyle Pflug, Principal PM Lead for Edge Developer, gave a talk at this year's online Build conference covering all the new capabilities. I'll touch on the high points, with an emphasis.

In the upper-left corner of Microsoft Edge, there's a button to switch between vertical tabs and horizontal tabs. Vertical tabs are a relatively new feature, and they're still being tweaked by Microsoft. It seems that in addition to working on the vertical tabs themselves, that Microsoft is playing around with a few ideas for what to do with the button in the corner of the browser.
In Edge Canary, Microsoft is currently testing additional options that appear when you click that button. The options were spotted and highlighted by Reddit user Leopeva64-2. In GIFs shared by Leopeva64-2, the browser has an option to view recently closed items and to add all tabs to a collection.

In the stable version of Edge, clicking the button switches between vertical and horizontal tabs immediately. If Microsoft adds these new options to the button, you'll have to click an extra time to switch between horizontal and vertical tabs.
That might be worth the tradeoff to have some of the new options. Microsoft may allow the menu to be customizable. Features in the Canary channel of Edge often get changed quite a bit before shipping to everyone. In many cases, they don't arrive for general users at all.

The new mode is available to some testers using the Microsoft Edge Canary version of the browser, and others can enable it manually with a flag. “Performance mode helps you optimize speed, responsiveness, memory, CPU and battery usage,” says Microsoft. “Performance improvements might vary depending on your individual specifications and browser habits.”

It’s not clear exactly how the performance mode changes Edge, but it does affect the Sleeping Tabs feature. If you enable performance mode then the Sleeping Tabs timeout will be locked to five minutes. Microsoft introduced sleeping tabs in Edge earlier this year, allowing the browser to automatically release system resources for inactive tabs when you have a number of tabs open, which helps new tabs run better or stop the browser from hogging memory and CPU resources in the background.

Performance mode in Edge will likely prove most useful for laptop users, as browsers can often have a big impact on battery life. Google has also been working on improving Chrome performance and battery usage over the past six months. An update in November significantly improved CPU usage, and an update earlier this year improved RAM and GPU usage.
